New Tower To Add To Leeds Student Cluster

Over the last decade, perhaps more than any other British city, Leeds has had its skyline totally transformed. Driving this huge change has above all been student housing with many of the tallest buildings in the city built for this use. This trend looks to continue with plans for a new 35-storey student tower designed by Carey Jones.
The scheme is being developed by the Manor Property Group who have swooped down on the remains of Life Homes and purchased the CASPAR site thats located on North Street.
This is currently occupied by the under demolition CASPAR apartments that are being pulled down despite less than ten years old thanks to their unsuitability for occupation. The site is however perfectly placed for students from all three universities in Leeds - Leeds Metropolitan University, the University of Leeds and Leeds Teaching Hospital.
Manor Property plan to build the £30 million project with it containing 626 bedrooms exclusively for student use, with the ground floor occupied by amenities for the residents such as a reading room and laundrette.
Manor has seen the potential for student housing and plan on replicating the Manor concept in a number of areas around the country with student hotspots including Salford, Sheffield, Bradford and Durham much in the same way UNITE has.
The real question however will be with regards to the design. Carey Jones are well known for their economic post-modernism however Leeds has got a mixture of student towers from the good with the Corten steel of Broadcasting Place, to the bad with Sky Plaza, the tallest student building in the world, to the ugly with the garish Opal 3. It should be interesting to see what Leeds gets this time...
